The periodic technical inspection is mandatory for every vehicle registered in Georgia, meaning every car on Georgian plates. The schedule and fees are set by a Government resolution and have applied in their current form since 1 February 2023. Below are the official figures only.
When your car needs an inspection
The schedule is counted from the manufacture date:
- Passenger cars (category M1) — first after 4 years, then every 2 years; every year once the car is more than 8 years old.
- Taxis — one year after manufacture, then every 6 months.
- Pickups — after 4 years, then every 2 years; every year after 8 years.
- Other light commercial vehicles up to 3.5 t (N1) — after 2 years, then every year.
- Buses (M2, M3) — one year after manufacture, then every 6 months.
- Trucks over 3.5 t (N2, N3) — one year after manufacture, then every year.
Example: a passenger car built in 2019 needed its first inspection in 2023 and the next one in 2025; from 2027, when it turns 8, it needs one every year.
How much the inspection costs
- passenger cars, pickups, taxis and light commercial vehicles — 60 GEL, re-inspection — 20 GEL;
- fully electric passenger cars — 48 GEL, re-inspection — 15 GEL;
- buses and trucks over 3.5 t — 100 GEL, re-inspection — 30 GEL.
The fees are set by Government Resolution No. 562.
What is checked
According to the Ministry of Economy, the inspection covers:
- vehicle identification;
- braking system;
- steering;
- visibility;
- lamps, reflectors and electrical equipment;
- axles, wheels, tyres and suspension;
- chassis and its components;
- environmental impact, including exhaust emissions;
- other equipment.
Bring the vehicle registration certificate and proof of payment.
If the car fails
If a significant defect is found, you get 30 calendar days to fix it. After the repair the car takes a re-inspection at the reduced fee listed above.
Right-hand drive cars
A right-hand drive car is inspected under the general rules. However, if it was first registered in Georgia after 1 January 2018 and its steering system was modified (the steering wheel was moved), it cannot pass the inspection. The same applies to a car whose steering wheel was moved after its first inspection.
Fines
- Driving without a valid inspection costs an individual 50 GEL and a company 200 GEL.
- Repeat violations within 30 days raise the fine: for individuals to 150, then 300 and 500 GEL; for companies and sole traders to 300, 500 and 700 GEL.
- The owner is also liable when letting someone else drive a car without a valid inspection.
After you buy a car
If the car has been re-registered to a new owner and is due for inspection, the inspection must be passed within 30 calendar days of the registration. How to re-register a car and what it costs is covered in our article on car re-registration in Georgia.
Who does not need an inspection
- vehicles not registered in Georgia (on foreign plates);
- motorcycles (category L) and O1 and O2 trailers (up to 3.5 t);
- historic vehicles built before 1960 and kept in original condition;
- vehicles taken out of service;
- vehicles with a design speed of 25 km/h or less.
You can check your car's dates on the pti.ge platform; the inspection hotline is 1484.
